If
HTML is about displaying information, then XML is about describing
information. Now, let's get something straight XML is not a
replacement for HTML; it is a vastly improvised enhancement
for content or database-driven sites. Its flexibility starts
right from the authoring: with HTML, authoring is limited to
a few preset tags; XML lets the author create her own tags.
It
was this content savviness that prompted a new start up. Indlaw.com,
to opt for XML. Says Consulting Editor, Indlaw.com: "We
own proprietary content pertaining to case laws, judgments,
and legislations, which run in excess of four million pages.
And we'll probably be reaching at least six million pages
of content by the year-end. XML was the answer for us as it
could make these millions of pages accessible, searchable,
and transferable in a low cost and effective way."

A
huge database on Indian legislation, Supreme Court cases,
and tax and regulatory issues makes indlaw.com a must-stop
for lawyers and professionals of related fields. It explains
the latest changes in law, thus avoiding the drudgery of looking
through voluminous and often inaccessible records. It also
publishes academic studies on issues of importance to legal
and corporate professions.
It
was well worth the labour and the site gets thousands of hits
every day though he launched it quietly without publicity.
Says Consulting Editor, Indlaw.com: "So far, it has just
been by word of mouth, yet the kind of response we have received
is fabulous."
"Usually
it takes a long time, in some cases even a few months, before
Supreme Court judgments are available in print," says
Consulting Editor, Indlaw.com. "Some of them crucial
precedents for other cases.
